jazzmeia-horn-300x230-319a051a03Saturday, January 6th at 6 PM.  Bethany Baptist Church – 275 W Market St, Newark, NJ

Meet the future of jazz when the Bethany Jazz Vespers series presents this intimate, free concert starring rising star Jazzmeia Horn, a recent winner of both the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and NJPAC’s own Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

With a musical confidence far beyond her years, this Texas-born singer has been influenced by a range of jazz legends (from Sarah Vaughan to Rachelle Ferrell), and has formed a distinctive, delectable repertoire that combines classic jazz with modern flavors drawn from gospel and neo-soul. On her recently released debut album, A Social Call, Horn offers a fresh take on evergreen standards (“I Remember You,” “East of the Sun”), hard-bop anthems (“Afro-Blue”), spiritual songs (“Wade in the Water,”), R&B nuggets (“People Make the World Go ‘Round”), and much, much more.

“Jazzmeia Horn is a singer who stands apart from many of her peers because she takes on every song she sings so naturally,” says London Jazz News. “Every word, gesture and ornament becomes an expression of her total conviction … she completely comes alive in the moment.” DownBeat says that Horn possesses “both astounding technique and an acute artistic vision. She has a thrilling presence, with a musical sensibility that strikes a deft balance between mid-century jazz and contemporary neo-soul.”

This free event is presented by Bethany Jazz Vespers and NJPAC.
