Celebrate Kwanzaa with this daringly theatrical company of dancers and drummers, who incorporate modern and West African dance, ballet, hip-hop and even martial arts on Saturday, December 14th at NJ PAC Victoria Theater.
Visually inventive and daringly theatrical, the multi-ethnic dancers and drummers of Forces of Nature Dance Theatre perform one-of-a-kind programs that are “centered in an African and an American intelligence that is global and ecological,” says The Metro Times. “Their aesthetic (is) visceral, thought-provoking, and creatively brilliant.”
The 5pm performance only includes a special Tribute to the Elders, honoring two outstanding community elders.
Led for more than three decades by artistic director and choreographer Abdel R. Salaam, Forces of Nature Dance Theatre has spearheaded its own unique blend of performing arts, combining elements of contemporary modern dance, traditional West African dance, ballet, house and hip-hop forms, as well as live music and even martial arts. “Trained in modern dance, ballet, jazz and traditional African dancing, Mr. Salaam woks with traditional ritual and dance forms, moving beyond reproduction or reanimation to dance that is not simply African or Afro-American, but a vibrant expression of a newer culture,” says The New York Times.
